The formulation and mixing quality of the tread compound determine truck tire performance: mileage, traction, tear resistance, and fuel consumption.
The compound composition also defines its suitability for different positions (drive or trailer axle) and the services it is intended for (regional or long-haul, city bus or quarry/construction use).
Rolling resistance has become an increasingly important feature in recent years because it is directly linked to the vehicle’s fuel consumption and, consequently, to COx emissions into the atmosphere.
Rolling resistance, together with aerodynamic drag, is the force that opposes the forward motion of the vehicle. It is caused by friction generated by the molecular interaction between rubber and reinforcing fillers (carbon black and silica).
The tread compound alone accounts for about 50% of the total rolling resistance of the entire tire, compared to its other components.
For this reason, the retreading industry must pay close attention to this increasingly crucial feature for the environmental sustainability of the sector.
Rolling resistance can be measured through standardized indoor testing, which can be carried out by authorized certification bodies.
The rolling resistance coefficient is the ratio between the force opposing rolling motion and the maximum load the tire can support. The higher this index, the greater the fuel consumption caused by the friction generated by the tire in contact with the road. This led to the creation of energy efficiency classes, from A (best) to F (worst), relating to the tire’s fuel consumption. This feature is included in the labeling regulation for new tires (EU1222/2009 and 740/2020), but it can also be measured on retreaded tires.
