Classification
Ethylene-Propylene (Diene) Copolymers (EPM) and Terpolymers (EPDM) belong to an interesting family of elastomers whose particular properties, such as resistance to weathering and many chemical agents, good performance at high and low temperatures, and excellent electrical properties, make them suitable for high-quality applications at competitive costs.

Polymer Type
The most important and significant parameters that characterize the properties of ethylene-propylene elastomers are:

  • Molecular weight
  • Ethylene content
  • Type and amount of third monomer

The combination of the options listed above allows for the identification of the most suitable types for different applications. Copolymers, chemically free of unsaturations, offer greater resistance to aging at high temperatures and to chemical agents in general, while terpolymers, in addition to providing excellent performance, are appreciated for their greater processing versatility.

Applications
Vulcanized products made from ethylene-propylene copolymers or terpolymers are characterized by the following properties:

  • Excellent resistance to ozone and oxygen, both in static and dynamic conditions
  • Excellent resistance to degradation due to atmospheric aging
  • Good resistance to high temperatures (up to 150°C) both in dry and humid environments
  • Good resistance to low temperatures (down to -55°C)
  • Excellent dielectric properties
  • Good resistance to various chemicals (organic and inorganic acids, alcohols, amines, antifreeze liquids, bleaching agents, detergents)
  • High permeability to water

The fields of application therefore range from the transportation sector to electrical cables. Significant presence is also noted in the household appliance sector, construction, modification of polyolefins and lubricating oils for automotive use, waterproofing, footwear, and “food-grade” products.
